Shoutout LA Article

May 02, 2024

Hi Callie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Seeing our sensitive stomach pup struggling with different treats inspired us to start a treat company with healthy ingredients such as purple sweet potatoes and coconut oil to help alleviate the sensitivity. In the early days, we could not find any healthy treats and snacks for our sensitive stomach pup to boost his fiber content and make his stool consistent. There was nothing in the market tailored to pups with sensitivity. The more we talked to dog parents, the more convinced we were that there is a need in the market for treats tailored specifically to pups with sensitivity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I currently work as a scientist researching proteins involved in cancer pathways at UCLA. I am passionate about the ongoing progress in cancer research and the continuous discovery of new findings. I earned my doctorate degree from NYU in 2021, amidst the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This period taught me the value of persistence in achieving success. I am highly focused and determined, committed to giving my best effort to accomplish my goals. I have done a lot of research on the cancer preventing and antiinflammatory properties in purple sweet potatoes. This is why we decided to start our brand around purple sweet potatoes. In my current role at Ubae.co, I often reflect on the parallels between our brand’s commitment to using high-quality, preservative-free ingredients like organic purple sweet potatoes, coconut oil, and wild honey for dogs with sensitivities, and the importance of prioritizing quality in our brand. I believe that high quality products are of the utmost importance to us and to dogs with sensitivity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a foodie and a big fan of discovering new places to eat! I love anything local ranging from food trucks to nice restaurants. If friends are visiting from out of town, I’d definitely focus on a food tour and plan everything around where we’re going to eat! Some of my favorite restaurants are Leo’s taco truck, Bestia, Matu, and Pa Ord Noodle. Other fun things to do would be going to Universal studio, doing an easy hike in Malibu with my dogs (Tapanga state park or Leo Carillo state beach), and visiting Griffith Park.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to dedicate my shoutout to Lynna Choi, the small business owner of woofboard (located in San Jose, CA). She believed in us from day one and helped advise us so much on so many levels. She is also such an inspiration of how to run a successful small business. We love and appreciate everything that she does for the dog community and the small business community.
